President Trump fired off a series of tweets on Monday morning that personally attacked Connecticut Senator Richard Blumenthal, calling him a “phony Vietnam con artist.”
Blumenthal appeared earlier in the morning on CNN’s “New Day” and said he was concerned about Russian collusion while praising the media. Trump has attacked Blumenthal’s war record at least twice in the past and didn’t hold back on Monday.
Trump tweeted, “Interesting to watch Senator Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut talking about hoax Russian collusion when he was a phony Vietnam con artist!”
The president continued: “Never in U.S. history has anyone lied or defrauded voters like Senator Richard Blumenthal. He told stories about his Vietnam battles and… conquests, how brave he was, and it was all a lie. He cried like a baby and begged for forgiveness like a child. Now he judges collusion?
Blumenthal famously admitted during a 2010 press conference that when he had said he served “in” the Vietnam War, he meant to say he served “during” the war, as a reservist and not overseas.
The president sent an assortment of tweets to kick off the week and hinted that he will return to New York’s Trump Tower next week.
“Working hard from New Jersey while White House goes through long planned renovation. Going to New York next week for more meetings,” he wrote.
He also blasted the media and “phony” polling while claiming his base is getting stronger.
Trump wrote, “Hard to believe that with 24/7 #Fake News on CNN, ABC, NBC, CBS, NYTIMES & WAPO, the Trump base is getting stronger!”
The failing @nytimes, which has made every wrong prediction about me including my big election win (apologized), is totally inept!
