Despite initially earning Pixar its worst opening weekend in studio history, “Elemental” has bounce back. It went on to have a box office comeback and achieve sleeper-hit status. That streak continues on streaming after debuting on Disney+ on Sept. 13. The animated film went on to become the most-viewed movie in its opening week on the platform this year.

Studio executives reported that it had amassed 26.4 million views in the first five days following its release on the streaming service, more than doubling that of live-action “The Little Mermaid” which hit the service earlier this month. That makes “Elemental” the most-watched film during the week of its premiere on Disney+ since “Turning Red.”

For the weekend of Sept. 15-17, “Elemental” ranked as the No. 1 most-streamed film on Whip Media’s Movie Ranker, which uses viewership data from its consumer app, TV Time, with over 28 million registered global users.

Netflix’s latest romantic comedy “Love at First Sight” followed at No. 2. The film, which begins with a chance meeting at an airport, is based on the 2011 novel “The Statistical Probability of Love at First Sight” by author Jennifer E. Smith.

Following up at No. 3 and slipping from the prior week’s top spot was the aforementioned “The Little Mermaid.”

Entering the ranker at No. 4 this week was “Fast X,” the latest film in the “Fast and the Furious” franchise, after releasing on Peacock this past weekend. The star-studded flick managed to overcome its high production costs to become a modest success for Universal Pictures.

After a limited theatrical release, Searchlight Pictures’ “Theater Camp” found some success on Hulu this week, coming in at No. 5. The ensemble-led comedy was praised by critics and audiences alike, becoming the strongest limited opening for the studio since 2019.

Disney’s “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” held steady this week, coming in at No. 6. The behind-the-scenes docuseries “Marvel Studios Assembled: The Making of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” seemingly continues to assist in driving viewer interest for the title.
