“The Agency” is a success for Showtime, and that’s not a secret. The espionage thriller saw 5.1 million cross-platform viewers globally, making it the most streamed new Showtime series in the history of the network. On the heels of these high ratings, the drama has been renewed for a Season 2 less than a week after its premiere.

Part of that accomplishment has to do with the increased reach Showtime originals now have. In January, the premium cable brand was added to its parent company’s streamer and is now officially branded as Paramount+ with Showtime.

“The success of ‘The Agency’ is proof that our new Showtime slate is poised to propel Paramount+ to its next phase of growth,” Chris McCarthy, Paramount Global Co-CEO and President/CEO, Showtime & MTV Entertainment Studios, said in a statement to press. “This achievement is a testament to the creative power of the team led by George Clooney, Jez Butterworth, Joe Wright and David Glasser and our incredible cast including Michael Fassbender, Richard Gere, Jodie Turner-Smith and Jeffrey Wright.”

An adaptation of the French drama “Le Bureau des Legendes,” “The Agency” follows Martin (Fassbender), a CIA agent who has to abruptly leave his undercover mission and return to London. As he learns the high stakes of why he was asked to return, he must also grapple with a daughter who feels abandoned by her father and a love he was forced to leave behind.

“The Agency” comes from Showtime/MTV Entertainment Studios. Keith Cox and Nina L. Diaz executive produce the series for Showtime/MTV Entertainment Studios, while David C. Glasser, Ron Burkle, David Hutkin and Bob Yari executive produce for 101 Studios. Other EPs include George Clooney and Grant Heslov for Smokehouse Pictures; Alex Berger for TOP – The Originals Productions; Ashley Stern and Pascal Breton for Federation Studios/Federation Entertainment of America; and Michael Fassbender. Jez and John-Henry Butterworth serve as writers for the series as well as executive producers. Joe Wright is also an executive producer in addition to directing the first two episodes of Season 1.
