Following a heated bidding war, STX Entertainment is nearing a deal to acquire Ilya Naishuller’s “Hardcore,” an ultra-violent action movie starring Sharlto Copley and Haley Bennett, TheWrap has learned.
Shot from the first-person POV of a super-soldier who must kill hundreds of bad guys to rescue his wife, “Hardcore” was the talk of Toronto based on its sheer audacity alone.
Copley plays multiple variations of the same character, Jimmy, and performs a spirited song-and-dance number in the middle of the movie.
Director Naishuller’s opening title sequence plays like the opening of a James Bond movie, if 007 was a complete psychopath. The film has a nasty sense of humor and best approximates the feeling of playing a video game, which bodes well for its commercial prospects.
WME Global is negotiating the deal.
