Tom Ortenberg's Open Road Films has made a deal with Netflix to make its movies available for streaming after they've been released on DVD, the company announced Tuesday.
The new deal makes its Open Road's movies available during what has, in the past, been considered the pay TV window — the post-release timeframe that movies have generally been shown on HBO and other premium movie channels.
Open Road's first movie will be among the first titles available to subscribers. That movie, "Killer Elite," is a thriller starring Jason Statham, Robert DeNiro and Clive Owen. It's set for a Sept. 23 theatrical release.
Open Road is a distribution company founded this year by AMC Entertainment Inc. and Regal Entertainment Group — the two largest movie theater companies in the United States.
In a written statement, Ortenberg (above), the CEO said, "Netflix provides us the opportunity to bring Open Road Films titles to consumers in the most innovative ways possible, and this partnership is an important part of our new model for theatrical distribution."
