L.A. Hearing on Comcast-NBCU Deal

Will be held Monday at the California Science Center downtown

The House Judiciary Committee is scheduling a second hearing on the Comcast-NBCU deal, this one to be held in Los Angeles on Monday.

The committee announced the hearing on Tuesday, saying it would take place at 9 a.m. at the California Science Center downtown.

Judiciary Committee chairman John Conyers Jr., D-Mich., had indicated at the committee’s first hearing on the deal that he had some additional questions and mentioned the possibility of scheduling a second hearing, but the announcement was a surprise.

The committee’s website said the hearing was called at “the chairman’s direction” and doesn’t give any indication of who will testify.

It comes as U.S. Rep. Maxine Waters, D-Calif., a member of the committee, continues to push the Federal Communications Commission to hold its own public hearing on issues raised by the deal.

The Judiciary Committee’s hearing will be Congress’ fifth on the deal.

The Justice Department is reviewing anti-trust implications of the deal, while the FCC is reviewing “public interest” implications.

Comcast and NBCU hope to close the deal late this fall.
