Edvard Munch’s ‘The Scream’ on Loan to MoMA

Edvard Munch's "The Scream" will be on view at MoMA from Oct. 24 to April 29, 2013

Edvard Munch’s"The Scream," one of the most recognized images in art history, is set to go on view at the Museum of Modern Art in New York for six months, beginning Oct. 24, the museum announced Tuesday.

MoMAMunch made four versions of "The Scream" between 1893 and 1910. The one on loan to MoMA, a pastel-on-board from 1895, was sold at a Sotheby's auction in May for a record $120 million to an anonymous private collector, reportedly financier Leon Black.

The three other versions — two paintings and one pastel — are in the collections of museums in Norway.

In 1994, "The Scream" was stolen from the National Gallery in Oslo and recovered several months later. More recently, "The Scream" and another painting were snatched from Oslo's Munch Museum in 2004 but recovered two years later.

The artwork will be on view through April 29, 2013.
