Charlie Sheen apparently has reached a deal in his Aspen domestic-violence case that may see him do just a little time.
A hearing in the Christmas Day incident between him and his wife Brooke Mueller, which is supposed to go to trial on July 21, has been moved up from June 18 to June 7.
Richard Cummins, Sheen's Aspen lawyer, circumspectly told TheWrap that the change in the hearing date was "in anticipation of a possible final disposition in the case with the district attorney's office."
When asked by TheWrap if that meant that negotiations between Sheen's lawyers and the Aspen D.A.'s office were coming to a close, Cummins reply was a quick "I think that's a fair statement."
Arnold Mordkin, the deputy D.A. handling the case, declined to offer any specific confirmation of the discussions between his office and Sheen's attorneys, or if an agreement was in the final stages.
However, he did tell TheWrap that "there is a reason we moved the dates, and reading between the lines you would not be inaccurate."
The actor was originally charged with menacing, a class five felony; criminal mischief, a class one misdemeanor; and second-degree assault. The latter was reduced to third-degree assault in a Feb. 8 court decision.
On March 15, Sheen entered a plea of not guilty in Aspen court.
Neither side offered details as to what a plea bargain deal for Sheen, who was facing a possible five years in jail, could contain. However, as TheWrap reported before, a deal could see the 44-year old actor pleading guilty to domestic felony charges and, among other outcomes, serving a short stint of 10 to 50 days in jail.
The time behind bars would insulate Sheen, who has had numerous run-ins with the law in the past, from any future ramifications from the domestic violence charges.
After some initial public and professional posturing, and time in rehab, Sheen, who reportedly earns over $900,000 an episode for "Two and a Half Men," signed on to the series for another two seasons earlier this month.
“To put a fitting end on the two-and-one-half months of whirlwind speculation," the actor said in a released statement, "I’m looking forward to returning to my CBS home on Monday nights."
