‘Avatar’ Hangs on to Top Box Office Spot Overseas

‘Valentine’s Day’ does well in Australia and the U.K., but not enough to unseat Cameron

While American audiences were busy getting their Valentine on, the rest of the world was still soaking up “Avatar” over the long weekend.

James Cameron’s fantasy captured a ninth week atop the international box office, putting up another $59 million from 8,453 screens in 71 markets. It’s now grossed $1.69 billion overseas, and $2.35 billion worldwide.

“Valentine’s Day,” which topped the domestic box office with $65.4 million, took second-place overseas with $30.4 million. It did well in Australia ($6.4 million), the U.K. ($4.7 million) and Germany ($2.5 million).

Rounding out the top five were Fox’s "Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief" ($28 million from 5,800 venues in 40 territories); Universal’s "The Wolfman" ($21 million from 4,222 screens); and the Fox drama "My Name Is Khan," about the detention of a Muslim with Asperger’s Syndrome who is detained at LAX.
